Charles E. Brown & Co., Boston
Charles E. Brown was admitted as a partner in the Estes and Lauriat
firm in 1886. He was in charge of the wholesale department. In 1891 he
left the firm and established his own publishing house-Charles E. Brown
& Co.
It published three different Mayne Reid titles in two
different formats. The exact years are unknown at this time. Certainly
the 1890’s is a fair presumption..
Afloat in the Forest
Desert Home
Boy Hunters
Both
formats have illustrations on plain paper. The second format text and
pictures are on cheaper paper. I do not have a priority for these
formats. There are no dates within the books and there are no
advertisements.
This first format is 7.5" x 5".
This format which states "Capt. Mayne Reid Works" is 7.25" x 5.25".
