H. M. Caldwell Co., New York, Boston
Herbert M. Caldwell left the employ of the Henry Altemus publishing
company in 1896 and formed his namesake company: H. M. Caldwell Co.
Between 1896 and 1914 Caldwell published mostly books in series but
also several hundred non series books.
Two Mayne Reid titles were included in the Famous Books for Boys Series
which was published between 1899 and 1905. As with many series the
cover format was changed on a yearly or every couple of years basis.
Below are the formats. Both Mayne Reid titles were published in each
format. Both the Caldwell Reid’s are reprints. All these formats
originally came with a dust jacket.
(Note that the books below are meant to show the format. Clearly only
one of them is actually a Mayne Reid title.)
