G. W. Dillingham, New York
In 1886 this firm succeeded G. W. Carleton and Company. George W.
Dillingham who had worked for A. K. Loring and Crosby, Nichols joined
Carleton as a clerk in 1864. By 1871 he was a partner.
In 1895 George Dillingham died from injuries he sustained in a
horseback riding accident.
In 1896 the Dillingham firm incorporated to become the G. W. Dillingham
Company.
The firm went bankrupt in 1916.
Initially in 1887 eleven Mayne Reid books were published for $1.50
each. The ten titles below are listed together in the Dillingham ads.
Lone Ranch is listed in "miscellaneous works". The basic format for all
of these books was the same. The books are blindstamped with the
centrally located Dillingham name on the front cover. Different years
have different peripheral cover patterns. The spine has a gold gilt
book appropriate picture. All of the books are dated.
This company did not publish any Mayne Reid first editions.

These titles are in wraps and sold for 25 cents each. These books have
not been seen.
By 1889 this firm was publishing sixteen Mayne Reid books in the same
format as the ten title list above. In 1897 and later the cover was a
pictorial rendition of a campsite with an Indian's portrait at the
bottom left.
