Thomas R. Knox & Company, New York
Thomas R. Knox & Company succeeded the James Miller publishing
house following Mr. Miller's death in 1883. Thomas R. Knox along with
his brother David founded the new company. By 1889 Worthington had
purchased the book plates of the financially doomed Thomas R. Knox and
Company. The Worthington Mayne Reid's were first published in 1889.
Thomas Knox died in 1898. His brother David had predeceased him by
several years.
Knox published the same 18 Mayne Reid titles as James Miller. The books
cost $1.25 each.
Knox published a new edition of the Mayne Reid books beginning in 1884.
These are large 12 mo. (7.5” x 5”) volumes with decorative cloth in
gilt. The books have been seen in green, blue, maroon and gold. All
eighteen volumes have the four page Mayne Reid Memoir by R. H. Stoddard
preceding the first chapter
Knox published no Mayne Reid first editions.
Dating the Knox's Mayne Reid's can be somewhat challenging. One key
point is that Knox was located at 813 Broadway in New York between
1884-1887 and at 817 Broadway in 1887-1888.
