Lippincott, Grambo and Co., Philadelphia
J. B. Lippincott and Co., Philadelphia
J. B. Lippincott was a well established bookseller and publisher
when he joined with Henry Grambo in 1850 to form Lippincott, Grambo and
Company. Grambo retired in 1855 and the company morphed into J. B.
Lippincott and Company.
This firm published one Mayne Reid title. In 1851 it
printed the first edition of The Scalp Hunters; or, Romantic Adventures
in Northern New Mexico.
This volume is 240 pages, cloth bound and cost 50 cents.
I have not seen this book.
J. B. Lippincott and Co. published one Mayne Reid title. It
reprinted the Lippincott, Grambo Scalp Hunters in 1856.
Advertisements in 1873 noted that Lippincott was to publish “Dead
Shot”. There is no evidence that it ever printed a book by this title
or “Death Shot” which was published by Beadle and Adams in 1878.
In the 1867 Lippincott catalogue there is a listing for a set of Mayne Reid books. The ad noted Captain Mayne Reid’s Scenes and Adventures in an eleven volume series of uniform books. There is no evidence that this series was ever published.
