I. & M. Ottenheimer, Baltimore
The Ottenheimer firm was established by two teenage brothers in
1890. Issac Ottenheimer, 19, and Moses Ottenheimer, 14, founded the
firm that would sell and publish works until 2002. They initially sold
remaindered books but also published joke books, detective stories,
westerns , etc.
In 1895 the house published two series: The Newsman Series of Choice
Novels and the Monumental City Series of Choice Fiction.
Book #2 in the Newsman Series is Afloat in the Forest by Mayne Reid. I
have not seen this Book. A Study in Scarlet by Arthur Conan Doyle is
book #1.
This series is rare enough that the Doyle book is not listed in the
classic Doyle bibliography by Green and Gibson.
Of interest is that the books in this series sold for 6 cents each or
$5.50 for one hundred.
