Ticknor and Fields, Boston

In 1854 Ticknor and Fields succeeded the Ticknor, Reed and Fields publishing firm. Ticknor and Fields was succeeded by Fields, Osgood and Co. in 1869. Ticknor and Fields reprinted the three Ticknor, Reed and Fields' Mayne Reid first editions in the same format as the last Ticknor, Reed and Fields format.

1. Desert Home
2. Boy Hunters
3. Young Voyageurs

The reprint edition of the above three titles had this format in 1854 and 1855.

Beginning in 1855 the Ticknor and Fields’ Mayne Reid titles had a new format. This format was used to reprint the three titles which had been published first by Ticknor, Reed and Fields (see above) and to publish the first editions from Forest Exiles to Cliff Climbers (except for Odd People which was published first by Harper and Brother). These titles were also published in this format by Fields, Osgood and Co.

18 mo. (6.75" x 5").
Except for the date on the copyright page and perhaps the name of the printer/ stereotyper , there is no difference in the format** of any one title between the first printing and the last one. Multiple colors have been seen. The spine picture etc. is unchanged for any one title but each title has a unique book specific picture.

** I have not seen an 1855 Forest Exiles’ book. It may have the earlier format of the 1854 Ticknor and Fields’ reprints.

The next four titles formed a "second series" of Reid's works.
The final four first edition titles published by Ticknor and Fields had new formats. The books were 12 mo. (7.25" x 5"). Each cost $1.50.
