White and Allen, New York
The White and Allen publishing firm had a relatively short life.
Originally Joel Parker White and Frederick A. Stokes left the employ
of Dodd, Mead in May, 1881 and formed White & Stokes. In 1883
Frank Allen, also a former Dodd, Mead & Co. employee joined
White and Stokes to establish White, Stokes & Allen. In 1887
White and Allen left Stokes to form White and Allen. It went
bankrupt in 1890.
White and Allen was the first American publisher of four (of the
five) Mayne Reid titles it published (Child-Wife had previously been
published by Sheldon in 1869). The first three books were published
individually and in a boxed set in 1888. They made up the Free Lance
Series.
1. Free Lances
2. No Quarter
3. Child Wife
In 1889 five titles were published and sold individually and as a
boxed set.
The new titles were:
4. Death Shot
5. Gwen Wynn
All the books had the same format. They were clothbound and 12 mo.
Red and green covers have been seen.
